In Nigeria, it is uncommon to see female kings running the affairs of their various towns, almost all leadership responsibilities have been left in the hands of men.
Women are given less or no support when the desire to occupy such a position arises. It has been the case in all the tribes of Nigeria,
Despite this, there are few exemptions in some towns across Nigeria mostly from the Yoruba tribes. In those towns we have female kings who perform the sane role make kings would do.
Most times, female kings are referred to as regents. They attend the council of kings meeting at the local level, state level, and federal level.
As females, they are expected to dress as men and not women because the position they occupy is meant to be occupied by males.
As a female king is a regent, she must be the daughter of the late king. Normally, regents are not supposed to exceed six months on the throne but things seem to have changed as many of them have stayed on the throne for years
They are not also meant to marry if they are unmarried before ascending the throne or get pregnant while on the throne.
