One of boxing’s big names might return to the ring soon. Gervonta Davis, with a record of 29 wins and 0 losses, hasn’t fought since beating Ryan Garcia last April.
But now, after dealing with legal issues, he’s been linked to several potential opponents.
ESPN’s Mike Coppinger says that Davis has agreed to fight his next opponent. He’s set to face Frank Martin, another undefeated American boxer with an 18-0 record.
The fight is expected to happen in late spring or early summer, with Davis putting his WBA lightweight title on the line.
This matchup could be tough for Davis. Martin, who is also 29 years old, is ranked sixth by The Ring and second by the WBC. Some critics have said that Davis hasn’t faced tough opponents in the past, but Martin could change that perception.
The fight is planned to be broadcast on Prime Video as a pay-per-view event, part of Amazon’s deal with PBC. The venue and location for the fight have not been announced yet.
Davis hasn’t been fighting regularly, like many boxers managed by Al Haymon. But in his case, it’s not because of boxing politics. He couldn’t fight due to legal issues.
After beating Garcia, Davis was sentenced to 90 days in jail for breaking the terms of a house arrest related to a 2020 hit-and-run incident.
