Babalawo Actors in the Yoruba Movie Industry

The Yoruba movie cannot be complete without acknowledging the importance of indigenous belief, the recognition of Babalawo is significant to traditional belief.

There are some prominent actors who are very savvy when it comes to performing the roles of Babalawo and they do chant incantations just like real Babalawos.

Out of many of them, there are six that are well recognised due to their ability to perform their roles very well. They include Ganiu Nofiu (Alapini Osa), Tajudeen Oyewole(Abijawarabiekun), Yinka Quadri, Taofeeq Olawale (Digboluja) Fasasi Olabankewi (Dagunro) and Lalude.

1. Ganiu Nafiu (Alapini Oosa)

Ganiu Nafiu is a veteran Yoruba Nollywood actor that has been in the industry for over four decades. He is known for his role as a herbalist in several Yoruba movies.

2. Yinka Quadri

Yinka Quadri is a Nigerian actor and producer born on the 6th of September 1959 in Victoria Island, Lagos State. He has starred in many movies most especially in Yoruba and also performed Babalawo roles in several movies.

3. Tajudeen Oyewole

Tajudeen Oyewole popularly known as Abija is also a veteran actor born on the 22nd of March, 1957. He does act the role of Babalawo and warriors in most of his movies.

He is known for his self appellation ‘Emi Abijawarabiekun’, and also known slapping his head whenever he was in a difficult situation when he acts the role of the herbalist in a movie.

4. Fatai Oodua A.K.A Lalude

Fatai Adekunle Oodua populaly known as Lalude is Nigeria vetean actor nrn on the 18th of Novevember. He has been in the movie indsutry for over four decades ago.

he does play the role of the herbalist in several Yoruba movies and play his role in a proffessional way.

5. Fasasi Olabankewi

Fasasi Olabankewi popularly known as Dangunro, he was a versatile Yoruba actor, and the father of Jamiu Olabankewi, who is also an actor.

Dagunro memory in the movie industry cannot be forgotten so easily, the impact he played in the rise of the Yoruba tradition to fit in the industry since the ’90s can never be erased.

He was known for his self-appellation ‘Gududgudu lemi, emi o fi igba kan tura le’. He kissed the dust in 2019.

6. Taofeeq Olawale Digboluja

Taofeeq Olawale is a fast-rising Nollywood actor that acts mostly in Yoruba. He can interpret his role very well (especially when given the chance to act as a herbalist in movies).

He is known for his self-appellation ‘Emi Atofiseogunran Okunrin Ogun’. He is fond to play the role of a herbalist in Yoruba movies and has gained recognition with the role he played.
